In the Grapevine..

Johan Eekhout Organic Gardener off to plant two grapevines

Johan Eekhout Organic Gardener off to plant two more vines for one very lucky customer

It is a fact that from country to country the way we prune Grape vines differs substantially. In Spain where I have seen, all the bearing shoots of the last year is severely cut back entirely without exception right onto the mainframe of stems or trunks.

I was taught by my grandfather in South-Africa, to leave between two or three swollen eyes on the shoots. But that was then and this is now….

Vines simply just do not like to be pruned in any way! Let them decide which parts to let die back at and where to distribute their energy in preparation for the next season. During the next summer, you may then remove all the dead wood of the previous year. A most valuable source of kindle and already dried!

A happy vine  is a healthy vine and a healthy vine bears delicious fruits ! Watch this space for more tips on how to keep your  grapevines happy.
